At The Thrive Clinic, we provide comprehensive Cognitive Assessments for children and adolescents to understand how they learn, think, and process information.
A cognitive assessment provides valuable information about your child’s learning profile, including their strengths and areas where they may need support. This helps parents, teachers, and professionals to better understand a child’s needs and how best to support them at home and in school.
A cognitive assessment is carried out by a Psychologist using standardised assessment tools. It looks at different areas of thinking and learning, which may include:
• Verbal comprehension
• Visual reasoning
• Working memory
• Processing speed
• Problem solving skills
These skills underpin many aspects of learning, including reading, writing, attention, and classroom participation.
Every assessment is individualised to the child and includes both formal assessment and clinical observation.
A cognitive assessment may be helpful if your child:
• Is experiencing learning difficulties
• Is finding school work more challenging than expected
• Has difficulties with attention or concentration
• Is being assessed for autism
• Requires a psychological report to support school supports
• Has uneven skills, with strengths in some areas and difficulties in others
Following the assessment, you will receive a detailed written report which includes:
• Your child’s cognitive profile
• Explanation of strengths and areas of difficulty
• Recommendations for supports at home and school
• Recommendations for further assessment or intervention, if appropriate
The report can be used to help guide school supports and intervention planning.
At The Thrive Clinic, our assessments are child-centred, supportive and evidence-based. Our goal is to help you gain a clear understanding of your child’s learning profile and provide practical recommendations to support their development.
