The starting point for all OTs is to conduct a full standardised assessment of your child's skills to gain an understanding of their strengths and challenges.
An occupational therapy assessment with a formal report will give information and recommendations to school and home with how to best support that child to reach their potential. This may look like strategies around managing a routine such as checklist for getting ready for school. It may involve information and recommendations for school around giving the child sensory or movement breaks during their day to ensure they are in the optimum state to learn. They may require a laptop for school if handwriting is too difficult. The process will include:
Initial Consultation (90-120 minutes)
Full Occupational Therapy Assessment & Report– Assess a child’s functional skills in the following area’s; fine and gross motor, sensory processing, self-care skills and visual processing skills.
Handwriting Assessment and assistive technology recommendation
Sensory Processing assessment; consultation (60min), standardised assessment and individualised sensory diet home programme
Occupational Therapy Review Assessment
Pre-school /School Assessment and report
Following the assessment, if occupational therapy intervention sessions are recommended, the report can be used to set goals and plan sessions.
