We understand that taking the step to have your child assessed for autism can feel overwhelming. You may have questions and concerns at this time and our team is here to provide clarity and support. Whether your child receives a diagnosis or not, our priority is to ensure that your child gets every opportunity to thrive.
Early autism assessments can open doors to interventions that can support your child's development. The sooner we understand your child’s strengths and challenges, the sooner we can create a tailored plan to help them succeed. An assessment gives us valuable insights and is the first step to your child reach their full potential with the right support.
The autism assessment process typically involves observing your child’s behaviours, gathering input from you, and using standardised tools to understand their developmental profile. We’ll guide you through every step, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and share your thoughts. We have outlined the process, step by step, below:
Initially, parents or guardians will contact us detailing their concerns and providing background information. Upon receipt, one of our team will review the provided information. We will then contact you to discuss any additional concerns and to ensure that we have all the accurate and pertinent information.
Our administrative team will then contact you to schedule the assessments at a convenient date for you.
Parents or caregivers will complete a standardised interview using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) tool. This structured interview enables the psychologist to comprehensively understand your child based on key diagnostic criteria. The interview will cover background information and the history of your child’s behaviour. Typically lasting two hours, this process can be conducted either online or at our clinic.
You and your child will visit our clinic for a standardised play-based assessment known as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2). This assessment involves a series of structured play activities, during which our team will work directly with your child. Typically, parents or caregivers do not participate in the assessment but are given the opportunity to be present in the room, especially if this will make your child feel more comfortable. Alternatively, you are welcome to wait in one of our comfortable clinic spaces. The duration of this assessment varies based on the child's age and typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. At this stage, your child may also undergo a cognitive assessment. This will be discussed with your clinician prior to the appointment
Upon completion of all assessments, our team will compile a comprehensive final assessment report. This detailed and professional document will focus on the assessments conducted and the observations made. Importantly, the report will include a diagnosis, if applicable. Given that many of our team members have a background with the Health Service Executive (HSE), the report will be written to HSE standards, ensuring you have the necessary information to collaborate effectively with HSE or Special Educational Needs Organiser (SENO) services.
Once the report is finalised, we will contact you to schedule a meeting to discuss the findings and recommendations. This meeting will provide an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have, and we will offer information, support, and guidance on the next steps to be taken. Again, this meeting can take place on line or in our clinic.
